Beneath 4km of Antarctic ice lies Lake Vostok, sealed for 15 million years. Discovered by radar in 1996, it's 250km long and kept liquid by geothermal heat despite -89°C above. In 2012 Russian scientists drilled through, finding bacteria unlike any known. Isolated from sunlight and air since before humans existed, it may mirror oceans on Europa and Enceladus. If life thrives there in darkness, pressure, and cold, our definition of habitable shifts dramatically outward.
