Pando is a forest that is actually one tree. In Utah's Fishlake National Forest, 47,000 quaking aspen stems covering 106 acres are genetically identical, connected by one root system. It weighs an estimated 6,000 tons, making it heavier than the Oregon honey fungus for largest by weight. At 80,000 years old, it sprouted before humans left Africa. Each trunk lives about 130 years, but the root is immortal, sending up new clones. Pando is now threatened because deer and cattle eat its young shoots faster than it can replace them.
