You Are Taller In The Morning Than At Night
You wake up taller than when you went to sleep.
Fact-checked · 1 verified sourceReviewed by the CurioVault curator · 8 October 2026 · Editorial standards

You are about one to two centimeters taller when you wake up than when you go to bed. Between each of your 23 spinal discs lies a gel-filled cushion. During the day, gravity and your own body weight compress these discs, squeezing fluid out like a sponge. At night, lying flat lets them reabsorb fluid and expand. Astronauts experience the extreme version — they can grow up to five centimeters in microgravity because their spines never compress. Children also grow mostly at night when growth hormone peaks. So measure yourself first thing in the morning if you want your maximum height. By evening, you have literally shrunk under the weight of your day.
