Oxford University is older than the Aztec Empire. Teaching at Oxford began by 1096, with formal recognition in 1248. The Aztec capital Tenochtitlan was founded in 1325, over 200 years later. When Oxford scholars were debating theology, the Mexica were still migrating. By the time Montezuma ruled in 1502, Oxford already had 200 years of graduates. It is a reminder that medieval Europe and pre-Columbian America overlapped far more than textbooks suggest. One institution outlived empires, still teaching while the Aztec pyramids were being swallowed by Mexico City.
