Your nose can distinguish at least 1 trillion different odors. For decades textbooks claimed only 10,000, based on a 1927 guess. In 2014 Rockefeller University researchers tested mixtures of 128 odor molecules and found people could discriminate over a trillion combinations. Humans have about 400 types of scent receptors, and the brain combines their signals like chords. Wine tasters and perfumers train this system, but even untrained noses beat the old limit. Smell is not our weakest sense, it is our most underrated, quietly mapping a trillion-scent world.
